COSMOS 1408 DEB
COSMOS 1408 DEB reentered Earth's atmosphere on Jun 2, 2026. The orbit below is the last tracked element set, shown for reference — it is not a current position.
Kosmos-1408 was a defunct Soviet Tselina-D electronic-intelligence satellite launched in 1982. On 15 November 2021 Russia destroyed it in a direct-ascent anti-satellite missile test at about 485 km, generating more than 1,500 catalogued fragments. The debris forced the ISS crew to shelter in their return spacecraft as the station passed near the cloud. Because the event was at a relatively low altitude, much of this debris re-enters over a shorter timescale than the higher-altitude clouds.
Altitude history
Apogee and perigee for COSMOS 1408 DEB across 6 days of archived orbital elements (8 element sets, one per day).
Derived from our own archive of CelesTrak orbital elements, sampled every 3 hours. Short windows show drag and station-keeping; they are not a reentry prediction.
