Kosmos-1408 was a defunct Soviet Tselina-D electronic-intelligence satellite launched in 1982. On 15 November 2021 Russia destroyed it in a direct-ascent anti-satellite missile test at about 485 km, generating more than 1,500 catalogued fragments. The debris forced the ISS crew to shelter in their return spacecraft as the station passed near the cloud. Because the event was at a relatively low altitude, much of this debris re-enters over a shorter timescale than the higher-altitude clouds.
