About the Zenit

Zenit

The Zenit is a family of Ukrainian-built orbital launch vehicles developed by the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau and manufactured by Yuzhnoye/Yuzhmash in Dnipro, Ukraine. Originally designed during the Soviet era as both a liquid-fueled booster and a standalone medium-to-heavy-lift rocket, it became one of the more capable and versatile launch vehicles to emerge from the post-Soviet space industry. Our flight record captures four tracked missions, all successful, spanning 2011 to 2017.

Origins and Configuration

The Zenit family traces its roots to the 1980s, when it was conceived in part as a first-stage booster for the Soviet Energia super-heavy rocket. Its core stage uses high-energy liquid oxygen and kerosene propellants, giving it a relatively clean-burning profile compared to older Soviet designs reliant on toxic hypergolic fuels. The variant represented in our data is the Zenit-3F, a three-stage configuration optimized for high-energy missions — particularly those requiring a Fregat upper stage to deliver payloads to geostationary or highly elliptical orbits.

Launch Sites and Operations

Zenit missions have flown from multiple facilities, most notably Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan — the storied launch complex with the longest operational history in spaceflight. A sea-based variant also flew under the Sea Launch program, which operated a converted ocean platform to enable launches from near the equator, maximizing efficiency for geostationary payloads. Missions in Our Record

The four missions tracked here represent a compelling cross-section of scientific and civil applications. Elektro-L No.1 and Elektro-L No.2 were Russian geostationary meteorological satellites, providing environmental monitoring data. Spektr-R, also known as RadioAstron, was a landmark space-based radio telescope that operated in a highly elliptical orbit to form an Earth-spanning interferometer — one of the most ambitious Russian science missions of its era. AngoSat-1 was Angola's first national communications satellite, marking an important milestone in African space development.

Legacy and Context

The Zenit occupies a notable place in the broader history of spaceflight as one of the few launch vehicles developed in Ukraine to achieve sustained international commercial use. Its combination of high-performance propulsion and compatibility with capable upper stages like the Fregat made it particularly well-suited to demanding GEO and science orbits. Political and economic disruptions following 2014 significantly curtailed Zenit operations, and the vehicle's long-term future remained uncertain in subsequent years.
