The Zenit 2M is a Ukrainian-built orbital launch vehicle operated primarily by the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos). It is a modernized derivative of the Zenit-2 rocket, itself developed by the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau and manufactured by Yuzhnoye/Yuzhmash in Dnipro, Ukraine. The vehicle occupies a notable place in the post-Soviet launch industry as a high-performance medium-to-heavy-class rocket capable of supporting demanding scientific and military payloads.
Development and Background
The Zenit family traces its origins to the Soviet era, when it was conceived as a versatile workhorse capable of handling a wide range of missions. The 2M designation reflects an incremental upgrade to the baseline Zenit-2 configuration, incorporating improvements to avionics, guidance systems, and other subsystems that enhanced reliability and mission flexibility. Like earlier Zenit variants, the 2M uses a liquid-propellant propulsion system burning liquid oxygen and kerosene (RG-1), a combination that produces high performance with relatively clean combustion. Launches take place from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
Flight Record
According to tracked flight data, the Zenit 2M flew twice between 2007 and 2011, recording one success and one failure or partial failure. This modest flight history reflects the vehicle's role as a specialized launcher rather than a high-cadence commercial workhorse during this period.
The successful mission was Zenit 2M | Tselina-2 23, which carried a Tselina-2 electronic intelligence satellite for Roscosmos — a continuation of a long-running series of Russian signals-intelligence spacecraft that the Zenit family had supported for many years.
The second tracked mission, Zenit 2M | Fobos-Grunt & Yinghuo-1, ended in failure. Fobos-Grunt was an ambitious Russian planetary probe intended to travel to the Martian moon Phobos, collect surface samples, and return them to Earth — one of the most technically complex interplanetary missions attempted since the Soviet era. It carried the Chinese Yinghuo-1 Mars orbiter as a secondary payload. Launched in November 2011, the spacecraft failed to escape Earth orbit after its upper stage did not fire as planned, and the vehicle eventually reentered the atmosphere. The loss was a significant setback for both Russian planetary science and international cooperation in deep-space exploration.
Role and Significance
The Zenit 2M represents a bridge between the Soviet-era Zenit lineage and more contemporary launch requirements. Its height of 4.6 m and diameter of 0.42 m — as recorded in configuration data for this variant — reflect a relatively compact upper-stage or interstage section adapted for specific mission profiles. The vehicle's association with high-profile government payloads, including a planetary science flagship mission, underscores the confidence Roscosmos placed in the Zenit platform for demanding assignments.
The Fobos-Grunt failure cast a shadow over the 2M's brief operational history, though the loss was widely attributed to spacecraft and upper-stage issues rather than deficiencies in the core Zenit vehicle itself. The broader Zenit family continued to operate in other configurations, most notably the Zenit-3SL used in the Sea Launch program.
