The Vostok 8K72 was a Soviet orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by the Soviet Space Program during the early years of the Space Age. A member of the broadly influential R-7 rocket family — originally derived from the world's first intercontinental ballistic missile — the 8K72 represented an early and critical step in the evolution of crewed Soviet spaceflight hardware, bridging the gap between purely experimental satellites and the vehicles that would carry human beings into orbit.
Design and Specifications
Standing 30.84 metres tall with a core diameter of 2.99 metres, the Vostok 8K72 followed the distinctive clustered-booster architecture characteristic of all R-7 derivatives, with four strap-on liquid-fueled boosters surrounding a central sustainer stage. This configuration provided the thrust needed to lift payloads of up to 4,550 kg to low Earth orbit, a substantial capability for its era. Like its R-7 relatives, the rocket burned liquid oxygen and kerosene, and lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in what is now Kazakhstan.
