The Tsiklon-2A was a Soviet orbital launch vehicle operated by the Soviet Space Program during the late 1960s. A member of the broader Tsiklon (Cyclone) rocket family developed by the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau in Ukraine, it represented an early and important step in the Soviet Union's efforts to establish a reliable medium-lift booster derived from intercontinental ballistic missile heritage.
Development and Design
The Tsiklon family traced its lineage to the R-36 ICBM, and the Tsiklon-2A was among the earliest orbital configurations to emerge from that lineage. Standing 39.7 metres tall with a core diameter of 3 metres, the vehicle was a relatively compact two-stage rocket optimized for delivering payloads to low Earth orbit. It was capable of lifting up to 3,000 kg to LEO, placing it in the medium-lift category by the standards of its era and making it well-suited to the operational military and scientific satellite missions the Soviet program prioritized at the time.
Launches were conducted from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, the primary Soviet launch facility in what is now Kazakhstan, which served as the operational hub for the majority of Soviet space missions throughout the Cold War period.
Operational History
The Tsiklon-2A was active from 1967 to 1969, a relatively brief operational window of roughly two years. During that period, the vehicle flew 8 tracked missions, achieving 7 successes alongside 1 failure or partial failure — a strong reliability record for a rocket in its early operational phase.
The vehicle's manifest reflects the priorities of the Soviet space program during this era. Missions carried designations associated with the US-A and I2P/I2M programs, indicating a focus on military reconnaissance and naval surveillance satellite development — payloads that required consistent, dependable access to low Earth orbit. Legacy

Its brief but productive service life demonstrated that the R-36-derived platform could be adapted successfully for orbital missions, validating design choices that the Yuzhnoye bureau would carry forward for decades.
Although the Tsiklon-2A itself was retired by the close of the 1960s, its contribution to establishing the Tsiklon lineage as one of the Soviet Union's most dependable rocket families gives it a meaningful place in spaceflight history. With a success rate exceeding 87 percent across its eight tracked flights, the vehicle left a credible operational record despite its short active period.
