The Titan IIIB is an American expendable orbital launch vehicle operated by the United States Air Force, developed as part of the broader Titan III family of rockets manufactured by Martin Marietta. Derived from the Titan II intercontinental ballistic missile lineage, it was purpose-built to support classified government payloads, particularly reconnaissance satellites, during a critical period of the Cold War space race.

Design and Configuration

Standing 45 meters tall with a core diameter of 3.05 meters, the Titan IIIB is a two-stage liquid-fueled rocket distinguished from other Titan III variants by the absence of solid rocket boosters. Instead, it was typically paired with an Agena D upper stage, which provided additional propulsive capability and significant on-orbit maneuvering flexibility. This combination made it especially well-suited for delivering intelligence-gathering satellites into precise low Earth orbits.
