Manufactured by Martin Marietta (later Lockheed Martin), the Titan IV series served as the primary heavy-lift workhorse for U.S. national security space missions during the 1990s, carrying classified military payloads that required both the vehicle's substantial lift capacity and the high reliability expected of government strategic launch systems.
Design and Configuration
The Titan 405A designation reflects a specific configuration within the Titan IV family, which combined a Titan IV core vehicle with a set of solid rocket motor upgrades. Standing 54 meters tall with a core diameter of 3.05 meters, the vehicle was a substantial rocket by any measure.
