Vehicle Overview

The Titan IV family, developed by Lockheed Martin, was the largest and most powerful expendable launch vehicle operated by the U.S. Air Force. Standing 54 meters tall with a core diameter of 3.05 meters, the Titan 402B IUS configuration pairs the Titan IVB core — itself an evolution of the earlier Titan 34D and Titan IV lineage — with two solid rocket motor upgrades and the two-stage solid-propellant IUS. The vehicle is capable of lifting approximately 21,680 kg to low Earth orbit, though the IUS upper stage is specifically optimized to transfer payloads to geosynchronous transfer orbit or direct geosynchronous orbit, rather than leaving them in LEO.

The Inertial Upper Stage, originally developed by Boeing for use with both the Space Shuttle and Titan IV, provides a highly reliable means of circularizing orbits at high altitudes. Its solid-propellant stages offer simplicity and long-term storability suited to the operational demands of military satellite programs.

Flight History

According to tracked mission records, the Titan 402B IUS flew five times between 1997 and 2004, achieving four successes and one failure or partial failure. All five tracked missions were conducted on behalf of the United States Air Force and were dedicated to launching satellites in the Defense Support Program (DSP) constellation — a series of infrared early-warning satellites designed to detect ballistic missile launches and other strategic threats.

The five recorded missions carried payloads designated DSP 18 through DSP 22, representing the final operational satellites in that long-running constellation. DSP satellites are large, geosynchronous spacecraft requiring precisely the kind of high-energy insertion capability that the IUS upper stage provides, making the Titan 402B IUS a logical and well-matched launch solution for these missions.

Role and Legacy

The Titan 402B IUS occupies a significant place in U.S. national security space history. By the time this configuration entered service, the Titan IV program was already winding down in anticipation of the transition to the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) program, which would eventually produce the Atlas V and Delta IV. The Titan 402B IUS nonetheless completed its assigned manifest, ensuring continuity of the nation's missile warning satellite coverage through the early 2000s.

The combination of a proven Titan airframe with the dependable IUS upper stage made the vehicle a trusted platform for irreplaceable government payloads, where mission assurance was the paramount concern. Its retirement marked the end of a Titan family lineage stretching back to the earliest days of American heavy-lift rocketry.
