Titan 34D Transtage

The Titan 34D Transtage is an American expendable orbital launch vehicle operated by the United States Air Force, configured with a restartable Transtage upper stage to deliver military payloads directly to geosynchronous and other high-energy orbits. A member of the long-running Titan family developed by Martin Marietta, the Titan 34D represented a significant evolution of the core Titan III airframe, combining enlarged solid rocket motors with proven storable-propellant liquid stages to support demanding national security missions.

Standing approximately 50 meters tall with a core diameter of 3.05 meters, the Titan 34D Transtage is a substantial vehicle by any measure. Its configuration pairs the two-stage liquid-propellant Titan core with a pair of large solid rocket motors strapped to the first stage, providing the high thrust needed for heavy payloads. The Transtage upper stage — fueled by nitrogen tetroxide and Aerozine 50 — was capable of multiple in-space restarts, making it ideally suited for the complex orbital insertion sequences required by geosynchronous satellites. The vehicle is rated to deliver up to 5,000 kg to geosynchronous transfer orbit, placing it firmly in the heavy-lift category for its era.
