A member of the broad Thor rocket family derived from the PGM-17 Thor intermediate-range ballistic missile, it paired the upgraded DM-21 variant of the Thor first stage with the Ablestar upper stage — a restartable liquid-fueled stage that represented a meaningful advance in upper-stage capability for its era.

Development and Design

The Ablestar upper stage was a significant technical step forward when it entered service, as its ability to restart in orbit allowed more precise orbital insertion than the single-burn upper stages common at the time. Standing 29 meters tall with a diameter of 1.44 meters, the vehicle had a slender, elongated profile typical of Thor-derived rockets. It was capable of delivering approximately 150 kilograms to low Earth orbit, a modest but operationally useful capacity that suited the relatively compact satellites of the early space age. The Thor family as a whole was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Company, and vehicles in this lineage launched predominantly from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, which provided the high-inclination trajectories favored for reconnaissance and navigation satellites.

Operational History

According to flight records, the Thor DM-21 Ablestar flew 19 tracked missions between 1960 and 1965, achieving 13 successes against 6 failures or partial failures — a success rate reflecting the challenges inherent in early orbital launch technology. The vehicle's active period places it squarely within the pioneering first decade of the space age, when launch reliability across the industry was considerably lower than later standards.

The rocket's most prominent role was supporting the Transit program, the United States Navy's navigational satellite system and the world's first operational satellite navigation network. Recent missions in the flight record include multiple Transit-O series launches — Transit-O 1 through Transit-O 5 — as well as the Transit-5BN 3 mission, underscoring the vehicle's centrality to sustaining and expanding the Transit constellation. These satellites enabled ships and submarines, particularly ballistic missile submarines of the U.S. Navy, to fix their positions with unprecedented accuracy, giving the Thor DM-21 Ablestar considerable strategic importance during the Cold War.
