The Thor Delta G is an American orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by Douglas Aircraft Company on behalf of the United States government. A member of the long-running Thor-Delta family — itself descended from the Thor intermediate-range ballistic missile developed in the 1950s — the Thor Delta G represents one of the many incremental variants that emerged as engineers progressively refined and upgraded the basic design throughout the 1960s to meet the growing demands of the space age.

Origins and Design

The Thor-Delta lineage began with NASA's early need for a reliable, modestly capable launch vehicle to place scientific and applications satellites into Earth orbit. Over successive variants, the basic airframe was stretched, upper stages were swapped, and propulsion systems were upgraded, with each new designation reflecting a distinct configuration. The Thor Delta G stands 30 meters tall and measures 2.44 meters in diameter at its widest point — dimensions consistent with the broader Thor-derived family. Like its relatives, it combined a liquid-fueled Thor first stage with upper stages designed to circularize payloads into their intended orbits.

Operational History

Our flight record shows the Thor Delta G flying twice, between 1966 and 1967, with both missions ending in success. That perfect record, while modest in total launches, reflects the maturity of the Thor-Delta platform by the mid-1960s, when the fundamental design was already well understood and the supporting ground infrastructure at launch facilities was firmly established.

The vehicle's primary customer was the United States Air Force, underscoring the military's continued reliance on the Thor-Delta family for national space objectives during this period of intense activity in the Space Race.

Notable Missions

The two missions conducted by the Thor Delta G were both in direct service of the Biosatellite program, a NASA initiative designed to study the effects of spaceflight — including weightlessness and radiation — on living organisms. The vehicle carried Biosatellite 1 and Biosatellite 2 into orbit, delivering biological payloads that helped lay the scientific groundwork for understanding how life responds to the space environment. These missions were of considerable scientific importance, contributing early data that would inform later human spaceflight planning.

Biosatellite 1, launched in 1966, and Biosatellite 2, launched in 1967, represented a focused, dedicated use of the Thor Delta G configuration, essentially tailoring this particular variant to serve a specific scientific program rather than a broad range of payload types.
