It belongs to the long-running Delta family of rockets, which traces its origins to the Thor intermediate-range ballistic missile developed in the late 1950s. Like its Delta predecessors, the Thor Delta D was designed to provide a reliable, medium-class launch capability for scientific and commercial satellites during a period of rapid growth in the space industry.
Development and Design
The Thor Delta D represented an incremental improvement within the evolving Delta lineage, which Douglas and NASA continually upgraded throughout the 1960s to keep pace with increasing satellite mass requirements. Standing 32 meters tall with a core diameter of 2.44 meters, the vehicle followed the characteristic slender profile of the Thor-derived family. It was capable of delivering up to 450 kg to low Earth orbit and approximately 104 kg to geostationary transfer orbit, making it well suited to the communications and experimental satellites of its era.
