The Thor Delta C was an American expendable launch vehicle developed and operated by NASA in cooperation with the Douglas Aircraft Company during the 1960s. A member of the prolific Thor-Delta family, it served as a workhorse for the United States' early scientific and meteorological satellite programs, bridging the gap between the pioneering Delta configurations of the early space age and the more capable vehicles that followed.
Development and Design
The Thor Delta C was a refined iteration of the Thor-derived launch vehicle lineage, which traced its roots to the U.S. Air Force's Thor intermediate-range ballistic missile. Like its predecessors, the vehicle used a Thor first stage paired with an upper stage configuration optimized for orbital insertion of small payloads. Standing 27.5 meters tall with a core diameter of 2.44 meters, the Thor Delta C was a compact but capable vehicle, able to deliver up to 81 kilograms to low Earth orbit — a modest but practically useful capacity for the scientific instruments of its era.
Launches were conducted primarily from Cape Canaveral, Florida, with the vehicle and its payloads managed largely in service of NASA's growing portfolio of Earth observation and space science missions.
Flight History
The Thor Delta C flew 10 tracked missions between 1963 and 1967, achieving 8 successes alongside 2 failures or partial failures — a reliability profile broadly consistent with the challenging standards of early orbital launch technology. The United States Air Force was the top customer by mission count, reflecting the close institutional relationship between military launch infrastructure and NASA's early satellite programs.

It lofted multiple spacecraft in the Orbiting Solar Observatory (OSO) program, including OSO 2, OSO C, and OSO 3, which were designed to study solar radiation and phenomena from orbit. The Thor Delta C also supported the TIROS and ESSA meteorological satellite programs, launching Tiros 10 and ESSA 1 — the latter representing the first satellite operated by the newly formed Environmental Science Services Administration and a milestone in operational weather forecasting from space. The scientific mission Explorer 28, part of NASA's Interplanetary Monitoring Platform series studying the magnetosphere and interplanetary medium, rounded out a roster that demonstrated the vehicle's versatility across disciplines.
Legacy
Though operational for only a roughly four-year window, the Thor Delta C made meaningful contributions to solar physics, Earth observation, and space environment research during a formative period in the history of spaceflight. Its missions helped establish the scientific and operational foundations upon which later, more capable Earth-observing and heliophysics satellite programs were built.
