Development and Design

The Thor Delta B was part of a progressive series of upgrades to the original Thor Delta configuration, incorporating improvements to upper-stage performance and guidance systems that incrementally expanded the vehicle's capabilities. Standing 31 meters tall with a core diameter of 2.44 meters, the rocket followed the established architecture of its family: a Thor-derived liquid-propellant first stage topped by upper stages derived from earlier ballistic missile programs. These refinements allowed the vehicle to deliver payloads of up to 370 kg to low Earth orbit and approximately 68 kg to geostationary transfer orbit, making it well suited to the relatively modest satellites of the era.
