Design and Configuration
Standing 22.4 metres tall with a core diameter of 2.44 metres, the Thor Burner 2 paired the well-proven Thor first stage with the Burner 2 upper stage, a solid-propellant kick motor developed by Boeing under Air Force contract. The Burner 2 upper stage was a meaningful improvement over its predecessor, offering greater reliability and improved guidance capability compared to the earlier Burner 1. This combination gave the vehicle a compact, cost-effective profile well suited to the lightweight military spacecraft it was tasked with orbiting.
