The Thor Burner 1 was an American expendable orbital launch vehicle operated by the United States Air Force, developed in the mid-1960s to place small military satellites into orbit. It represented an early step in the evolution of the Thor rocket family — a lineage that traces back to the Douglas Aircraft Company's Thor intermediate-range ballistic missile — into a versatile suite of space launch vehicles that would serve American national security needs throughout the Cold War era.
Design and Configuration
Standing 23 metres tall with a diameter of 2.44 metres, the Thor Burner 1 was a compact, two-stage vehicle. Its first stage was derived from the well-established Thor booster, which provided a proven and reliable foundation. The upper stage was the Burner 1, a solid-propellant kick stage purpose-built to circularize or adjust orbits for small payloads. This straightforward solid-upper-stage approach kept the system relatively simple and responsive compared to more elaborate cryogenic upper stage configurations of the era. The combination was well-suited to the modest mass requirements of early reconnaissance and surveillance satellites.
Operational History
The Thor Burner 1 was active between 1965 and 1966, a brief but operationally significant period. Our flight record documents four launches, of which three were fully successful and one resulted in a failure or partial failure. This success rate reflected both the relative maturity of the Thor first stage and the inherent challenges of early solid upper-stage technology.
The vehicle's missions were closely tied to the Defense Satellite Applications Program (DSAP), a classified Air Force initiative to field meteorological satellites in support of military operations. Three tracked missions — DSAP-2 F1, DSAP-2 F2, and DSAP-2 F3 — formed the core of this operational series, delivering weather reconnaissance satellites that helped military planners assess cloud cover over areas of strategic interest, including in support of reconnaissance overflights during the Cold War. The fourth tracked mission, OPS 8386, similarly served Air Force requirements of the period.
Launches were conducted from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, the primary West Coast launch site used for polar and sun-synchronous orbits favored by reconnaissance and meteorological satellites needing global Earth coverage.
Legacy
Although the Thor Burner 1 had a short operational lifespan, it laid important groundwork for subsequent configurations. It was succeeded by the Thor Burner 2, which incorporated an improved upper stage offering greater performance and flexibility. The broader Thor upper-stage program demonstrated that simple, solid-propellant upper stages could reliably serve national security space requirements without the complexity and handling demands of liquid-propellant systems.
The vehicle's role in lofting early military weather satellites was quietly significant: reliable meteorological data from space became an increasingly critical component of military planning, and the DSAP series helped establish the operational doctrine and infrastructure for what would eventually evolve into the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP), a constellation that continues in some form to this day. The Thor Burner 1's brief record thus connects directly to a legacy of military space weather observation spanning more than half a century.
