About the SSLV

SSLV (Small Satellite Launch Vehicle)

The Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) is a small-lift orbital rocket developed and operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Designed to address the growing global demand for dedicated, low-cost launches of small satellites, the SSLV represents India's effort to capture a share of the commercial small-satellite market alongside its larger workhorse, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

Design and Capabilities

Standing 34 metres tall with a diameter of 2 metres, the SSLV is a compact, three-stage solid-propellant rocket with a liquid-propellant velocity-trimming module (VTM) for final orbital insertion. Its streamlined design prioritizes rapid integration — ISRO designed the vehicle to be assembled and launched within days rather than the weeks or months required by larger rockets. The SSLV is capable of delivering up to 500 kg to low Earth orbit (LEO), making it well-suited for Earth observation satellites, technology demonstrators, and rideshare missions. Launches take place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on Sriharikota Island, off the southeastern coast of India.

Flight History

Our records show four tracked flights spanning 2022 to 2027, reflecting a relatively young vehicle still maturing through its operational life. Of those flights, two are recorded as successful, with one resulting in a failure or partial success — a noteworthy early setback that nonetheless informed subsequent improvements to the vehicle.

The SSLV's inaugural mission, EOS-02 (Microsat-2A) (Demo 1), launched in 2022 and ended in a partial failure when a fault in the VTM placed satellites in an unstable orbit. ISRO conducted a thorough review and returned the vehicle to flight with EOS-7 & rideshare (Demo 2), which successfully delivered its payloads and validated the corrected design. The follow-on mission EOS-08/Microsat-2C continued building on that operational success. The most recent mission in our records, Space MAITRI, underscores the vehicle's role in supporting both national and collaborative spaceflight objectives.

Role and Customers
