The SS-520-5 is a Japanese orbital launch vehicle operated by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), derived from the SS-520 sounding rocket family. It holds a notable place in spaceflight history as one of the smallest rockets ever used to successfully deliver a satellite to orbit, standing just 9.7 metres tall with a diameter of 0.5 metres — dimensions more commonly associated with a large research rocket than an orbital launch system.

Origins and Design

The SS-520 was originally developed as a two-stage sounding rocket used for upper-atmospheric and scientific research. JAXA engineers explored the possibility of adding a small third stage to push the vehicle's payload all the way to orbital velocity, creating what became the SS-520-5 configuration. The result is an extremely compact, three-stage solid-fueled rocket capable of placing payloads of up to 4 kg into low Earth orbit — a class of performance precisely matched to the emerging generation of ultra-small "nano" and "pico" satellites.

Flight History

Our records show two flights of the SS-520-5 between 2017 and 2018, with one success and one failure.

The first attempt, SS-520-4 | TRICOM-1, launched in 2017 and ended in failure. The mission was intended to deploy the TRICOM-1 small technology demonstration satellite, but a data link anomaly during the first stage of flight caused the vehicle's onboard computer to halt the ignition sequence for the second stage. The rocket subsequently fell into the ocean, and the mission was not completed. JAXA conducted a thorough investigation of the anomaly and implemented corrective measures before proceeding with a follow-up attempt.

The second flight, SS-520-5 | TRICOM-1R, launched in 2018 and achieved full success. The vehicle delivered the TRICOM-1R satellite — a rebuilt replacement for the lost TRICOM-1 — into low Earth orbit, validating the corrected design and demonstrating that an extremely modest rocket could, with careful engineering, serve as a functional orbital launch system. With that flight, JAXA confirmed the SS-520-5 as the smallest rocket in the world to have successfully achieved orbit at the time, a distinction that attracted significant attention from both the scientific community and the growing commercial small-satellite industry.

Significance

The SS-520-5 program illustrated an important principle in the modern era of small satellites: that purpose-built, low-cost, minimal launch vehicles can be a practical path to orbit for payloads in the kilogram class. Rather than requiring a dedicated small-sat launcher of conventional scale, JAXA demonstrated that a well-understood sounding rocket heritage could be incrementally extended to full orbital capability.

While the vehicle's 4 kg payload capacity to low Earth orbit is modest even by the standards of contemporary small-launch services, the program provided valuable engineering data and demonstrated institutional willingness to iterate quickly following a failure — launching a successful replacement mission just roughly a year after the initial anomaly. The SS-520-5 remains a landmark vehicle in the history of miniaturized launch systems and a demonstration of JAXA's capability to operate at the frontier of small-spacecraft access to space.
