A member of the broad R-7 rocket family — the lineage that traces back to Sergei Korolev's original intercontinental ballistic missile and encompasses vehicles such as the Sputnik, Vostok, and later Soyuz launchers — the 11A59 represents a specialized configuration developed to support advanced experimental satellite missions.

Design and Capability

Standing 30 meters tall with a core diameter of 2.99 meters, the 11A59 follows the general architecture characteristic of R-7 derivatives, featuring a central core stage with strap-on boosters arranged around its base. It is capable of delivering up to 1,400 kilograms to low Earth orbit, a capacity suited to heavier experimental payloads of the era. Like other members of its family, it operated from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in what is now Kazakhstan, the premier Soviet launch facility of the period.

Operational History

The 11A59 flew an exceptionally focused operational career, with two tracked flights between 1963 and 1964, both of which were successful. Its missions were exclusively in service of the Soviet Space Program, reflecting its purpose as a purpose-built vehicle rather than a general-use workhorse.

Both of the vehicle's known missions carried Polyot spacecraft — the Polyot and Polyot-2 satellites. The Polyot program represented an important step in Soviet space technology, as these were among the earliest satellites capable of maneuvering in orbit under their own propulsion. This made them highly unusual for their time and of clear strategic and scientific significance, demonstrating the ability to change orbital parameters after launch — a capability with obvious implications for both military reconnaissance and future rendezvous and interception missions.
