Manufactured by RKTs Progress (Rocket and Space Centre Progress) in Samara, Russia, it represents the most capable variant of the modernized Soyuz 2 family, distinguished from its sibling the Soyuz 2.1a by its Fregat upper stage and an upgraded third-stage engine that delivers superior performance to higher-energy orbits.

Development and Design

The Soyuz 2.1b is the product of a long modernization effort applied to the legendary Soyuz rocket lineage, a family whose origins trace back to the Soviet R-7 intercontinental ballistic missile of the 1950s. The 2.1b variant incorporates a digital flight control system and modernized engine management compared to earlier Soyuz generations, improving both accuracy and versatility.
