Simorgh
The Simorgh (Persian: سیمرغ, meaning "phoenix") is an Iranian orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by the Iranian Space Agency (ISA) under the direction of Iran's Ministry of Information and Communications Technology. Manufactured within Iran's domestic aerospace industry, it represents the country's most capable declared civilian space launch system and has served as the primary vehicle for Iranian orbital attempts since its introduction.
Development and Background
Simorgh was designed as a two-stage rocket intended to place small satellites into low Earth orbit. It is larger and more capable than Iran's earlier Safir launch vehicle, which it succeeded as the nation's primary orbital launcher. The vehicle lifts off from the Imam Khomeini Space Launch Center (also known as Shahrud), located in Semnan Province in northern Iran. Development of Simorgh attracted significant international attention and scrutiny given the technological overlap between space launch vehicles and ballistic missile programs.
Flight History
Our tracking data records seven flights between 2017 and 2024, making Simorgh one of the more persistently flown vehicles in Iran's spaceflight program despite a challenging operational record. Of those seven flights, two were successful and five resulted in failure or only partial success — a reflection of the considerable technical difficulties Iran has faced in maturing the vehicle's propulsion and staging systems.
The vehicle's early missions included the Payam and Zafar-1 satellites, both of which failed to reach orbit. These setbacks highlighted persistent challenges with the upper stage's performance during the critical orbital insertion phase. A subsequent mission carrying three unknown payloads also did not achieve full mission success.
The program's fortunes improved with later flights. A mission carrying the Mahda research satellite alongside Keyhan-2 and Hatef-1 marked a notable achievement, as did the mission lofting Fakhr-1 and Saman-1, demonstrating a growing capacity to deploy multiple small satellites on a single launch. These successes represented meaningful milestones for Iran's civil space ambitions and validated years of iterative development.
The Iranian Space Agency has been the top customer across all tracked missions, consistent with Simorgh's role as a state-directed program serving national remote sensing, communications research, and technology demonstration objectives rather than commercial clients.
Significance
Simorgh occupies an important place in the history of spaceflight as one of the few orbital launch vehicles developed entirely outside the major established spacefaring nations. Its troubled but persistent flight record illustrates both the ambition of Iran's space program and the steep engineering challenges inherent in developing indigenous orbital launch capability. Each successive mission has provided operational experience that has contributed to incremental improvements, and the vehicle's two confirmed successes demonstrate that Iranian engineers have achieved genuine, if intermittent, orbital launch competence.
With flights spanning 2017 to 2024, Simorgh remains an active element of Iran's launch infrastructure, and further missions carrying government-sponsored payloads are anticipated as the country continues to expand its satellite constellation.
