The Shavit (Hebrew for "comet") is an Israeli orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) on behalf of the Israeli Space Agency. It holds the distinction of being the launch vehicle that carried Israel's first satellites into orbit, making Israel one of a small number of nations to have independently developed and operated orbital launch capability.
Origins and Development
Shavit was derived from the Jericho ballistic missile program, adapting proven propulsion and guidance technology for the purpose of placing small reconnaissance and research satellites into orbit. Its development was driven by Israel's strategic need for independent space access, particularly for domestic Earth-observation satellite programs that could not rely on foreign launch providers for sensitive payloads.
The vehicle launches from Palmachim Airbase, located on Israel's Mediterranean coast. Due to its geographic position — with hostile territory to the east — Israel launches its rockets westward, over the Mediterranean Sea, placing satellites into a retrograde orbit. This unconventional launch direction imposes a significant performance penalty compared to eastward launches, which would benefit from Earth's rotational velocity, making Shavit's ability to reach orbit all the more notable as an engineering achievement.
Flight History

The two missions recorded are Ofeq-1 and Ofeq-2, both carried out for the Israeli Space Agency. Ofeq-1, launched in 1988, was a landmark event — Israel's first satellite, and a demonstration that the country had mastered the full chain of technology required for independent spaceflight. Ofeq-2 followed in 1990, consolidating that capability and demonstrating operational repeatability.
Both Ofeq satellites were small spacecraft placed into low Earth orbit, consistent with Shavit's design as a launcher optimized for compact payloads delivered to relatively low altitudes.
