The Scout X-2M is an American orbital launch vehicle developed by Ling-Temco-Vought (LTV) for NASA and operated on behalf of the United States government. A member of the prolific Scout family of solid-fueled rockets, the X-2M represents one of the incremental development variants that characterized Scout's evolution during the early 1960s, as engineers refined the vehicle's staging, guidance, and motor performance to improve reliability and expand its capabilities.

Background and Design

Scout was the United States' first all-solid-propellant orbital launch vehicle and one of the smallest orbital rockets of its era. Developed originally under NASA's auspices at Langley Research Center, the vehicle was designed to provide an economical, relatively simple means of placing small scientific and military payloads into low Earth orbit. The Scout family progressed through a long series of named variants — each designated with letters and numbers reflecting successive changes to its stages or systems — and the X-2M configuration was part of this iterative refinement process during the early period of the program.

Standing 22 meters tall with a diameter of 1.02 meters, the Scout X-2M is a slender, four-stage vehicle whose compact form belies the complexity of coordinating four sequential solid rocket stages to achieve orbital velocity.
