The Scout X-2 is an American small orbital launch vehicle developed by Chance Vought (later LTV Aerospace) for NASA, representing an early configuration in the long-running Scout family of solid-fueled rockets. Operated primarily on behalf of NASA and the US Navy, it formed part of the United States' effort during the early 1960s to field a reliable, cost-effective launcher capable of placing small scientific and experimental payloads into low Earth orbit.
Design and Specifications
Standing 25 meters tall with a diameter of 1.01 meters, the Scout X-2 was a slender, four-stage solid-propellant vehicle. Its compact dimensions made it well suited for operations from relatively modest launch facilities. The vehicle was capable of delivering up to 76 kilograms to low Earth orbit, a modest but practically useful capacity for the small scientific satellites common to that era. The all-solid propulsion stack gave Scout vehicles a logistical simplicity that larger liquid-fueled rockets could not match, reducing both preparation time and infrastructure requirements. Launches of Scout variants were conducted primarily from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia and Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
Operational History
The Scout X-2 conducted two tracked flights, both occurring in 1962, yielding one success and one failure or partial failure. This brief operational window places the X-2 as a transitional configuration within the Scout development program, which progressed through numerous incremental variants as engineers refined staging, guidance, and motor performance across the late 1950s and 1960s.
The vehicle's two known missions served its top customers, NASA and the US Navy. The mission designated Scout X-2 | SOLRAD 4B supported the Navy's SOLRAD program, a series of satellites designed to monitor solar X-ray and ultraviolet radiation — data with direct relevance to understanding radio propagation and space weather. The second mission, Scout X-2 | P-21A, was associated with a classified or experimental Navy payload, reflecting the vehicle's utility for defense-adjacent scientific work alongside civilian science objectives.

The Scout family holds a distinguished place in spaceflight history as one of the first all-solid-propellant orbital launch vehicles and one of the longest-serving American rockets of the twentieth century. The X-series configurations of the early 1960s were formative steps in proving the concept and refining the design before the Scout matured into the more standardized variants that would carry hundreds of payloads through the 1990s.
