The Scout A was an American small-payload orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by NASA, serving as one of the earliest members of the long-running Scout rocket family. Manufactured by Vought (later LTV Aerospace), the Scout series was designed to provide the United States with an affordable, reliable means of placing small scientific and research satellites into low Earth orbit. The Scout A represented a mature, standardized configuration of this family, flying exclusively on solid-propellant stages — a design philosophy that kept operations relatively straightforward compared to the liquid-fueled rockets of the era.
Design and Capability
Standing 25 meters tall with a diameter of 1.01 meters, the Scout A was a slender, four-stage solid-propellant vehicle. Its modest footprint made it well suited to operations from smaller launch facilities. The rocket was capable of delivering up to 122 kilograms to low Earth orbit, placing it firmly in the small-lift category.
