SARGE
SARGE (Suborbital Autonomous Rocket with GuidancE) is a reusable suborbital sounding rocket developed and operated by EXOS Aerospace, an American commercial launch company. Designed as a technology demonstrator and precursor to a future orbital vehicle, SARGE represents EXOS Aerospace's effort to build a commercially viable, reusable rocket capable of carrying scientific and experimental payloads to the edge of space.
Vehicle Overview
Standing 11 meters tall with a diameter of 0.51 meters, SARGE is a slender, single-stage vehicle built around the principle of vertical takeoff and vertical landing — a reusability approach that distinguishes it from traditional expendable sounding rockets. Its relatively compact frame is designed to reduce per-flight costs by recovering and refurbishing the vehicle between missions, a key goal for EXOS Aerospace as it works toward a broader commercial launch business.
EXOS Aerospace conducts SARGE operations from Spaceport America in New Mexico, one of the United States' principal commercial launch facilities. The arid desert environment and the spaceport's infrastructure have made it a natural base for the vehicle's test campaign.
Flight History
SARGE flew four times across an active period spanning 2018 to 2019, with its debut mission, "Pathfinder" (Launch 1), serving as an initial systems checkout flight. The program then progressed through Launch 2, designated "Mission 1", followed by Launch 3 and Launch 4 as the team sought to refine vehicle performance and demonstrate reliable recovery.
None of the four tracked flights resulted in a fully successful outcome. All four are recorded as failures or partial failures, reflecting the inherent difficulties of developing a new reusable rocket with a small commercial team. While some flights demonstrated meaningful progress — achieving powered flight and gathering valuable engineering data — the vehicle consistently encountered challenges that prevented it from completing its mission profile as intended. Anomalies during these flights included issues related to propulsion, vehicle stability, and landing, underscoring the technical complexity of reusable suborbital operations.
Significance and Context
Despite its troubled flight record, SARGE occupies a meaningful place in the story of commercial spaceflight. EXOS Aerospace, founded largely by alumni of the Armadillo Aerospace project — itself a pioneering effort in reusable rocket development — brought considerable grassroots engineering experience to the program. SARGE continued in that tradition: a small-team, iterative approach to solving the hard problems of reusability on a limited budget.
The vehicle's 2018–2019 test campaign placed it among a broader wave of new commercial entrants attempting to open up affordable access to suborbital space, serving customers in scientific research, technology demonstration, and educational sectors. EXOS Aerospace remained the vehicle's primary customer throughout the flight record, reflecting the program's status as an in-house development effort rather than a commercially mature service.
