The Safir (meaning "Ambassador" in Persian) is an Iranian orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by the Iranian Space Agency (ISA) under the broader aerospace program of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It holds the distinction of being Iran's first domestically developed rocket to successfully place a satellite into Earth orbit, making it a landmark achievement in the country's spaceflight history.
Development and Design
Safir is a small, slender two-stage rocket standing 22 meters tall with a diameter of 1.25 meters. Its relatively modest dimensions reflect its purpose as a light-lift vehicle designed to carry small satellites to low Earth orbit. The rocket is understood to draw on technologies related to earlier Iranian ballistic missile programs, adapted for the demands of orbital flight. It is launched from the Imam Khomeini Space Launch Site (also known as Semnan Space Center) in Iran's Semnan Province.
Flight History
According to tracked flight data, Safir conducted five flights between 2008 and 2015, achieving four successes and one failure or partial failure. This record reflects a reasonably strong debut performance for a first-generation national launch vehicle.
The program began with the Omid mission, which appears twice in the flight record, indicating the vehicle's inaugural orbital campaign in early 2009. Omid — meaning "Hope" — became Iran's first domestically built satellite to reach orbit, a moment of significant national and symbolic importance. The subsequent Rasad 1 mission in 2011 demonstrated continued development of the program, followed by Navid in 2012. The most recent tracked mission, Fajr (meaning "Dawn"), flew in 2015, deploying a small Earth-observation satellite and representing the program's final confirmed flight in this dataset.

Safir occupies an important place in spaceflight history as the vehicle that made Iran the ninth country in the world to independently develop the capability to launch a satellite into orbit. While its payload capacity is limited — suited only to very small satellites — its development demonstrated that Iran had mastered the fundamental technologies of multi-stage rocketry, staging separation, and orbital insertion.
The Iranian Space Agency was the sole customer for all tracked Safir missions, reflecting the vehicle's role as an institutional and national capability demonstrator rather than a commercial launch platform. The satellites it carried — Omid, Rasad 1, Navid, and Fajr — were primarily experimental or Earth-observation payloads, consistent with an early-stage national space program building foundational competencies.
Legacy
Safir paved the way for subsequent Iranian launch vehicle development, including the larger Simorgh rocket.
