The KSLV Naro-1 (Korean Space Launch Vehicle, also known as Naro-1 or KSLV-I) is a South Korean orbital launch vehicle developed by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) in partnership with Russia's Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center. Representing South Korea's first domestically launched orbital rocket, Naro-1 holds a significant place in the country's spaceflight history as the vehicle that inaugurated national launch capability from Korean soil.
Background and Development
Naro-1 was developed as part of South Korea's broader ambition to establish an independent space program. The rocket flew from the Naro Space Center, located on Oenaro Island in South Jeolla Province — South Korea's first purpose-built launch facility. The vehicle's development reflected a hybrid approach, combining a Russian-supplied first stage with a South Korean-developed upper stage, an arrangement that allowed KARI to gain hands-on experience in launch vehicle engineering while benefiting from established Russian expertise.
Flight History
Naro-1 was active between 2009 and 2013, during which it conducted three flights, all carrying payloads on behalf of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. The vehicle achieved one success and recorded two failures or partial failures, giving it a challenging operational record that nonetheless culminated in a historic milestone for South Korean spaceflight.
The three missions — STSAT-2A, STSAT-2B, and STSAT-2C — all carried variants of the Small Technology Satellite series. The first attempt in 2009 (STSAT-2A) ended in a partial failure when the payload fairing failed to fully separate, preventing the satellite from reaching orbit. The second attempt in 2010 (STSAT-2B) ended in an outright failure, with the rocket lost in an explosion shortly after launch. After an extensive investigation and redesign effort spanning several years, the third and final launch in January 2013 (STSAT-2C) successfully delivered its satellite to orbit, marking South Korea as a spacefaring nation capable of launching a domestic payload from its own territory.
Significance
The successful third flight was a landmark moment, making South Korea one of a relatively small number of countries to have independently launched a satellite from their own launch site. Despite the setbacks of the first two missions, the program provided KARI with invaluable engineering experience in areas ranging from launch operations to payload integration and failure analysis.
Legacy
Naro-1 was retired following its single successful mission, having fulfilled its primary role as a technology demonstrator and stepping stone. The knowledge and infrastructure developed through the KSLV-I program directly informed South Korea's subsequent and more ambitious KSLV-II (Nuri) program, a fully indigenous launch vehicle developed without foreign partnership. In this respect, Naro-1's uneven but ultimately successful flight record proved foundational to the long-term growth of South Korea's national space launch capability.
