The Mu-4S (also written M-4S) is a Japanese solid-fueled orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), the academic research organization that pioneered Japan's early space program. A member of the broader Mu (M) rocket family, the Mu-4S represented a significant step in Japan's ambition to achieve independent access to space using domestically developed technology.

The Mu-4S emerged from a lineage of sounding and research rockets developed at the Kagoshima Space Center on Japan's southern island of Kyushu, which served as its launch site. ISAS pursued a philosophy of incremental development, using each successive rocket generation to refine solid-propellant staging, guidance, and attitude control. The Mu-4S was a four-stage, all-solid vehicle standing 23.6 meters tall with a base diameter of 1.41 meters, capable of delivering approximately 180 kilograms to low Earth orbit.
