A member of the Taurus family of ground-launched rockets — the "Minotaur-C" designation reflecting a later rebranding of the original Taurus line — the 2110 configuration represents an early variant optimized for delivering small to medium payloads into low Earth orbit from coastal launch sites. Standing 27.9 meters tall with a diameter of 2.35 meters, it is a road-transportable, ground-lit vehicle that can operate without a fixed launch pad, giving it notable flexibility compared to larger competitors.
Origins and Design
The Taurus rocket emerged in the early 1990s as Orbital Sciences sought to extend its launch capabilities beyond the air-launched Pegasus vehicle. Where Pegasus relied on a carrier aircraft, Taurus (later rebranded Minotaur-C) was designed to lift off directly from the ground, enabling heavier payloads. The 2110 configuration designation refers to the specific combination of upper stages used in this variant. With a rated payload capacity of 1,380 kg to low Earth orbit, the vehicle occupies a practical niche serving government and commercial small-satellite operators that require more lift than Pegasus could provide but do not require the scale of larger expendable rockets.
Flight History
According to tracked flight data, the Minotaur-C 2110 flew twice between 1999 and 2001, recording one success and one failure or partial failure — a record that reflects the inherent challenges of establishing reliability in a relatively young launch vehicle configuration.
The mission Taurus 2110 | Arirang-1 & ACRIMSat demonstrated the vehicle's capacity to carry multiple payloads simultaneously, orbiting South Korea's Arirang-1 Earth observation satellite alongside NASA's ACRIMSat, a solar irradiance monitoring spacecraft. This multi-manifest approach is a hallmark of the small-launch industry, allowing operators to share costs and schedule across complementary payloads.
The subsequent mission, Taurus 2110 | OrbView-4, ended in failure. OrbView-4, a high-resolution commercial imaging satellite built for GeoEye's predecessor, was lost when the vehicle did not achieve the intended orbit, representing a significant setback for both Orbital Sciences and its commercial customer.
Role and Legacy
The Minotaur-C 2110's operational window was brief, spanning just a few years at the turn of the millennium, but it contributed to an important period in the maturation of the commercial small-launch sector.
