M-V
The M-V (also written Mu-5 or M-5) is a Japanese solid-fueled orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), which later merged into the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Manufactured in Japan and flying exclusively from the Uchinoura Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture, the M-V represented the culmination of Japan's long-running Mu rocket family and stood as one of the most capable solid-fueled launch vehicles ever built for scientific missions.
Standing 30.8 meters tall with a diameter of 2.5 meters, the M-V is a three-stage solid-propellant rocket capable of delivering up to 1,800 kg to low Earth orbit. Its design prioritized reliability and precision for high-value scientific payloads, making it the vehicle of choice for Japan's most ambitious space science programs throughout its operational life.
Operational History
Our flight record captures seven launches between 1997 and 2006, with six successes and one failure or partial failure. This record reflects a vehicle that was trusted with some of Japan's most scientifically significant missions of the era, spanning astrophysics, planetary exploration, and solar observation.
Among the most notable missions carried by the M-V was Hayabusa, Japan's pioneering asteroid sample-return spacecraft, which set out to rendezvous with the near-Earth asteroid Itokawa. The vehicle also lofted Nozomi, Japan's first interplanetary mission and an attempt to reach Mars. In the field of X-ray astronomy, the M-V launched both ASTRO-E and its successor Suzaku (ASTRO-EII), the latter successfully establishing itself as a major observatory after the original mission was lost. The rocket further delivered Akari, an infrared astronomy satellite, and Hinode, a solar observation spacecraft developed in partnership with international partners including NASA and ESA.
The ASTRO-E mission in 2000 represents the single failure in the tracked record, when a first-stage malfunction prevented the spacecraft from reaching its intended orbit — a significant loss for the global X-ray astronomy community. The subsequent recovery with Suzaku demonstrated the resilience of the scientific program built around the M-V platform.
Legacy and Retirement
The M-V was retired after its final flight in 2006, primarily due to the high operational costs associated with solid-fueled vehicles of its scale. JAXA subsequently transitioned smaller scientific payloads to the Epsilon rocket, a more modern and cost-efficient solid-fueled vehicle that drew on technologies and lessons developed during the M-V program.
Despite its relatively small number of flights, the M-V holds an outsized place in Japanese spaceflight history. It enabled a generation of world-class scientific observatories and demonstrated Japan's independent capacity to conduct deep-space and high-energy astrophysics missions without reliance on foreign launch providers. The missions it carried continue to be cited in scientific literature, and the vehicle remains a defining chapter in the story of ISAS and JAXA's contribution to space science.
