The Long March 8 (Chinese: 长征八号, abbreviated CZ-8) is a Chinese medium-lift orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC). Designed to address a gap in China's launch portfolio for sun-synchronous and mid-inclination orbits, it serves as a cost-competitive option for commercial and government payloads requiring reliable access to low Earth orbit and geostationary transfer orbit.
Development and Design
Long March 8 was developed to modernize China's medium-lift capability, combining heritage components from the Long March 3A and Long March 7 families into a new two-stage configuration augmented by liquid-fueled strap-on boosters. Standing 50.34 meters tall with a core diameter of 3.35 meters, the vehicle occupies a practical middle ground in CASC's rocket family. It is capable of delivering up to 8,100 kg to low Earth orbit and 2,800 kg to geostationary transfer orbit, making it well-suited for commercial satellite constellations, scientific payloads, and lunar relay missions.
A notable aspect of the Long March 8 program is the development of a reusable variant — designated CZ-8R — intended to allow recovery of the first stage and boosters, reflecting China's broader push toward reusable launch systems. The baseline expendable version, however, has anchored the vehicle's early operational career.
Flight History
According to tracked flight records, Long March 8 has conducted six orbital launch attempts between 2020 and 2026, achieving five successes with no recorded failures or partial failures, reflecting a strong early operational record.
The vehicle's debut flight took place in 2020, demonstrating its core capabilities. Since then, it has accumulated a diverse manifest. A landmark early mission was the Queqiao-2 relay satellite launch, supporting China's lunar exploration program by positioning a communications bridge for far-side lunar operations — a high-profile assignment that underscored confidence in the platform.
More recently, Long March 8 has become a workhorse for SpaceSail constellation deployments, conducting multiple dedicated rideshare missions for polar orbit broadband satellite groups, including SpaceSail Polar Group #5, #7, and #9. This pattern of constellation-support launches mirrors a global trend of medium-lift vehicles finding sustained business in the proliferated low Earth orbit satellite market. Additional missions have carried payloads such as XJY-7 alongside secondary spacecraft, demonstrating the vehicle's multi-manifest flexibility.
Role and Operators
CASC remains the primary customer and operator of the Long March 8, consistent with the vehicle's role as a state-developed asset serving both national space programs and China's growing commercial launch market. Launches have taken place from the Wenchang Space Launch Site on Hainan Island, China's modern coastal launch facility that allows a broad range of orbital inclinations and benefits from its lower-latitude position.
Long March 8 represents an important step in China's effort to field a diverse, modern launch fleet capable of competing commercially while supporting ambitious national missions in Earth observation, communications infrastructure, and deep-space exploration.
