About the Long March 4A

Long March 4A

The Long March 4A (also written Chang Zheng 4A, often abbreviated CZ-4A) is a Chinese expendable orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST) under the authority of China's Ministry of Aerospace Industry. It represents an early member of the Long March 4 family, a line of rockets designed to complement the more prominent Long March 2 and Long March 3 series by offering a dedicated capability for sun-synchronous and polar orbits.

Standing 41.9 metres tall with a core diameter of 3.35 metres, the Long March 4A is a three-stage liquid-propellant rocket capable of delivering up to 4,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit. Its design drew heavily on the heritage of the Long March 3, adapting proven propulsion and structural technologies into a configuration optimized for high-inclination missions — a role increasingly important as China sought to expand its Earth observation and meteorological satellite programs during the late 1980s.

Operational History

The Long March 4A conducted its first flight in 1988 and completed its final tracked mission in 1990, giving it a brief but historically significant operational window of roughly two years. Our flight record captures two launches, both of which were successful, yielding a perfect 2-for-2 record. Though modest in number, these missions carried considerable scientific and strategic weight for China's nascent space program.

Both flights were conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Aerospace Industry and supported China's meteorological ambitions. The rocket's two confirmed missions — the Feng Yun 1A and Feng Yun 1B satellites — placed China's first generation of polar-orbiting weather satellites into orbit. The Feng Yun (meaning "Wind and Cloud") series marked a landmark achievement, establishing China as a nation capable of independently developing and deploying operational meteorological spacecraft. These satellites provided valuable atmospheric imagery and helped lay the groundwork for subsequent generations of Chinese Earth observation infrastructure.

Launches were conducted from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi Province, a facility purpose-built for polar and sun-synchronous missions and closely associated with the Long March 4 family throughout its history.

Place in the Long March Family

The Long March 4A served as the direct predecessor to the more capable and longer-lived Long March 4B, which entered service in the 1990s and carried forward the same design philosophy with incremental improvements in performance and reliability. In this respect, the 4A functioned as a developmental and operational bridge — demonstrating the viability of the platform before China invested in a more refined successor.

Although the Long March 4A's operational life was short and its total launch count small, its contributions were disproportionately significant. The two Feng Yun missions it delivered remain foundational chapters in the history of Chinese meteorological spaceflight, and the vehicle itself helped establish SAST as a credible developer of independent launch solutions outside the dominant CASC Long March 2/3 production lines.
