Long March 3A

About the Long March 3A
Long March 3A
The Long March 3A (CZ-3A) is a Chinese medium-lift orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC). Manufactured by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, it serves as the backbone of China's geostationary mission program and forms the foundation of the Long March 3 family, which also includes the larger 3B and 3C variants.
Design and Capability
Standing 52.5 metres tall with a core diameter of 3.35 metres, the Long March 3A is a three-stage rocket. Its first two stages burn a combination of nitrogen tetroxide and unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine, while the third stage uses a cryogenic liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen engine — a significant technical achievement that placed China among the small number of nations to master high-energy upper-stage propulsion. This cryogenic third stage gives the vehicle its ability to deliver payloads of up to 2,300 kg to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), making it well-suited for communications satellites and meteorological spacecraft in that mass class.
Operational History
The Long March 3A made its first flight in 1994 and remained in active service through 2018, spanning a career of nearly 25 years. Across the 27 flights recorded in this database, the vehicle achieved a perfect success rate, with all 27 missions reaching their intended orbits. This reliability record made it a trusted workhorse for high-value Chinese national space infrastructure programs during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
Launch operations for the Long March 3A are conducted from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province, a site chosen in part for its relatively low latitude, which provides a helpful velocity boost for missions targeting geostationary orbit.
Missions and Customers
The vehicle's primary customers were Chinese state organizations, with China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation and China Aerospace Corporation accounting for the majority of its manifest. The Long March 3A played a central role in two of China's most consequential national programs: the Beidou satellite navigation system and the Fengyun meteorological satellite series.
Among its most notable recent missions were dedicated Beidou launches, including the Beidou No. 22 and Beidou-2 I7 spacecraft, which helped expand China's independent global navigation network. The vehicle also lofted multiple generations of weather satellites, including Fengyun 2-07, Fengyun 2-08, and Fengyun-2H, providing China and the broader Asia-Pacific region with continuous meteorological coverage. A Compass-IGSO-5 mission rounded out the recorded flights, further supporting Chinese navigation infrastructure.
Legacy
By the time its operational run concluded in 2018, the Long March 3A had established itself as one of the most consistently successful vehicles in Chinese launch history. Its cryogenic upper stage technology directly informed the development of the more capable Long March 3B and 3C variants, which carry heavier payloads to GTO using the same core architecture augmented with strap-on boosters. The 3A's unbroken success record over 27 flights stands as a testament to the maturity of China's space launch capability during this era.
