The Long March 1 (also known as Chang Zheng 1, or CZ-1) is a Chinese orbital launch vehicle developed by the People's Republic of China and operated under the authority of the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building Industry. It holds a landmark place in spaceflight history as the rocket that inaugurated China's orbital launch capability, making the country the fifth nation to independently place a satellite into Earth orbit.

Development and Design

The Long March 1 emerged from China's ballistic missile program during the 1960s, adapted and extended to serve as a space launch vehicle. It is a multi-stage rocket combining solid and liquid propulsion technologies. While specific performance figures are not listed here, the vehicle was designed to carry modest payloads into low Earth orbit, consistent with the early-generation technology of its era. Its development represented a significant indigenous engineering achievement, pursued largely in isolation from other spacefaring nations.

Launch History

Our flight record tracks 2 flights of the Long March 1, both conducted between 1970 and 1971, and both resulting in success. The vehicle maintains a perfect record across its tracked missions, with no failures or partial failures recorded.

The first tracked mission carried Dong Fang Hong 1 ("The East Is Red 1"), China's inaugural satellite, which launched in April 1970. The spacecraft famously broadcast a patriotic musical melody from orbit, announcing China's arrival as a spacefaring nation. This mission remains one of the most historically significant orbital launches of the twentieth century.

The second tracked mission delivered Shijian 1 ("Practice 1") to orbit in 1971. Shijian 1 was a scientific satellite tasked with gathering data on the space environment, representing China's first step beyond purely symbolic spaceflight toward practical scientific application.

Both missions were conducted on behalf of the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building Industry, the governmental body then responsible for overseeing China's aerospace and defense industrial programs.

Operational Context

The Long March 1 served an exclusively pioneering role. It was never intended as a high-volume commercial or operational workhorse, but rather as a proof-of-concept vehicle to establish the foundational capability that subsequent Long March variants would build upon. The broader Long March family would go on to become one of the world's most prolific rocket lineages, but the CZ-1 itself flew only its small handful of missions before being retired.

Launches took place from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China, the country's oldest and most historically significant launch facility.

Legacy

Despite its brief operational life, the Long March 1's contribution to spaceflight history is outsized relative to its flight count. It demonstrated that China possessed the technical foundation to reach orbit independently, and it set in motion a national launch vehicle program that continues to expand and evolve today. The two missions it flew — both successful — were precisely the missions that mattered most at a defining moment in the history of human spaceflight.
