Kinetica 1

Kinetica 1 (also rendered as *Jielong-3* in Chinese) is a medium-class commercial orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by CAS Space (China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation's commercial subsidiary), based in China. Designed to serve the growing smallsat and constellation deployment market, it represents one of the more capable rockets to emerge from China's expanding commercial launch sector in the early 2020s.

Design and Specifications

Standing 30 metres tall with a core diameter of 2.65 metres, Kinetica 1 is a solid-fueled rocket with a four-stage configuration. Its compact proportions make it well suited to rapid launch cadence operations, a priority for commercial operators needing flexible scheduling. The vehicle is capable of delivering up to 2,000 kg to low Earth orbit (LEO), placing it in a practical class for multi-satellite rideshare missions and dedicated constellation builds. Launches have taken place from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in Shanxi Province.

Operational History

Kinetica 1 made its orbital debut in 2022 and quickly established a consistent flight record. According to tracked flight data, the vehicle has completed 13 missions between 2022 and 2026, of which 12 were fully successful and one resulted in a failure or partial failure — a reliability rate that compares favorably with other vehicles in its class during their early operational phases.

The rocket has demonstrated a strong capacity for multi-satellite deployment, with several missions placing large batches of payloads into orbit simultaneously. Recent missions have included the deployment of 9 satellites in a single flight, 8 spacecraft from the Jilin-1 Earth observation constellation, and a dedicated flight carrying the Chutian-2 01 and 02 satellites. Other notable recent flights delivered the PRSC-HS1 and AIRSAT-03/04 payloads and a further batch of 7 satellites, underscoring the vehicle's role as a workhorse for constellation replenishment and expansion.

Role and Customer Base

CAS Space is both the developer and the primary customer of Kinetica 1, frequently using it to launch commercial remote sensing and Earth observation payloads on behalf of third-party satellite operators. The Jilin-1 constellation, operated by Chang Guang Satellite Technology, has been among the most prominent payload families carried by the vehicle, reflecting the strong demand for high-revisit optical imagery from Chinese commercial operators.

Within China's broader commercial launch landscape, Kinetica 1 occupies a distinct niche: it is larger and more capable than the smaller solid rockets offered by competitors such as Galactic Energy or ExPace, yet retains the scheduling simplicity associated with solid propulsion. This makes it an attractive option for operators needing to place meaningful payload masses into orbit without committing to the longer lead times typical of larger liquid-fueled vehicles.

Significance

Kinetica 1's sustained launch cadence and high success rate through its first several years of operation have helped CAS Space establish itself as a credible player in the competitive commercial small-launch market.
