The Feng Bao 1 (风暴一号, meaning "Storm 1") is a Chinese orbital launch vehicle developed and operated under the Seventh Ministry of Machine Building Industry, the administrative body that oversaw China's early space and missile programs. Manufactured at the Shanghai Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Institute, it represents a significant, if often overlooked, chapter in China's early spaceflight history as the country's first launch vehicle developed outside the Beijing-centered program responsible for the Long March family.

Development and Design

Feng Bao 1 traces its origins to the DF-5 intercontinental ballistic missile program, sharing much of its fundamental architecture with that system. Standing 33 meters tall with a diameter of 3.35 meters, the vehicle was a substantial two-stage rocket capable of delivering up to 2,500 kg to low Earth orbit — a meaningful capacity for its era. Its development was a product of the political climate of the early 1970s, when responsibilities for space launch capabilities were deliberately distributed across competing industrial centers, partly as a consequence of the Cultural Revolution's disruption to centralized institutions.

Feng Bao 1 launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, China's primary launch facility, located in the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia. Its operational years overlapped with the early Long March vehicles, and the two programs existed in a degree of institutional rivalry, each backed by different industrial and political constituencies. Ultimately, the Long March family proved more adaptable and survived to become China's enduring launch infrastructure, while Feng Bao 1 was retired after 1981 without a direct successor.

Legacy

Despite its mixed reliability record, Feng Bao 1 contributed meaningfully to China's accumulation of launch experience during a formative period. The Shanghai-based industrial complex that produced it helped cultivate engineering expertise that would inform later Chinese space efforts.
