Design and Capability
Standing 35 metres tall with a diameter of 4 metres, the Delta III 8930 is a notably larger vehicle than earlier Delta variants. Its payload capacity reflects this ambition: the rocket is capable of delivering 8,290 kg to low Earth orbit and 3,810 kg to geostationary transfer orbit, the latter figure being roughly double that of the Delta II it was intended to complement. The 8930 designation reflects the vehicle's configuration within Boeing's numbering system, encoding details of its stage and strap-on booster arrangement. The first stage featured a common booster core derived from the Delta II but substantially upgraded, while the vehicle made use of a cryogenic upper stage — a significant departure from the storable-propellant upper stages used on earlier Delta variants.
Operational History
The Delta III 8930 flew three times between 1998 and 2000, a brief operational career that proved deeply troubled. Of those three flights, only one was fully successful, with the remaining two resulting in failure or partial failure — a record that effectively ended the program's commercial prospects.
