It represented one of the first members of the long-running Delta rocket family, itself descended from the U.S. Air Force's Thor intermediate-range ballistic missile. The Thor-Delta played a formative role in establishing reliable, routine access to orbit for scientific and applications satellites during the dawn of the Space Age.
Origins and Design
The vehicle was conceived as a relatively low-cost, off-the-shelf orbital launcher by combining the proven Thor first stage with an upper stage drawn from the Vanguard and other programs. Standing 18.42 meters tall with a diameter of 2.44 meters at its base, the Thor-Delta was a compact and slender rocket by later standards, though well-suited to the modest payloads that characterized early satellite programs. Rather than being designed from scratch, it was a practical synthesis of hardware already proven in prior programs, allowing it to reach operational status quickly and at manageable expense.
