Black Brant IX

The Black Brant IX is a Canadian-built sounding rocket operated by NASA and developed by Bristol Aerospace (later Magellan Aerospace) of Winnipeg, Manitoba. As a member of the long-established Black Brant family, it represents one of the most reliable and widely used sounding rocket platforms in the world, with a heritage stretching back to the 1960s. Unlike orbital launch vehicles, it is designed to carry scientific payloads on suborbital trajectories, enabling brief but valuable windows of observation above the atmosphere.

Design and Configuration

Standing 12.2 metres tall with a diameter of 0.46 metres, the Black Brant IX is a slender, single-stage vehicle well suited to the demanding requirements of high-altitude scientific research. Its compact form factor makes it compatible with a range of launch facilities, from established ranges in North America to remote international sites.
