The Atlas SLV-3 was an American expendable orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force. A member of the long-running Atlas rocket family, the SLV-3 (Standard Launch Vehicle 3) represented a refinement of the earlier Atlas D and Atlas Agena configurations, optimized for government satellite missions during the mid-1960s.

Design and Configuration

Standing 21 meters tall with a diameter of 3.05 meters, the Atlas SLV-3 retained the distinctive "stage-and-a-half" architecture that defined the Atlas family. This design featured a pair of booster engines that jettisoned during ascent alongside a sustainer engine that burned through to orbital insertion, all fed from a single propellant load. The vehicle's pressurized stainless-steel propellant tanks served as structural members, a hallmark engineering choice inherited from earlier Atlas variants. The SLV-3 was capable of delivering approximately 800 kilograms to low Earth orbit, placing it in a capable class for the era's government payloads.

Operational History

Based on the flight record, the Atlas SLV-3 flew four times between 1966 and 1967, achieving a perfect success rate across all tracked missions. This brief but unblemished operational period reflects the vehicle's role as a reliable workhorse for specific USAF programs rather than a long-production-run launcher.

The most notable missions flown by the SLV-3 were in support of two distinct programs. The ATDA (Augmented Target Docking Adapter) mission launched a manned spaceflight-related target vehicle intended for rendezvous and docking practice as part of the NASA Gemini program — demonstrating the Atlas family's continued relevance to human spaceflight support. The three PRIME (Precision Recovery Including Maneuvering Entry) missions — PRIME 1, PRIME 2, and PRIME 3 — were USAF test flights validating a lifting-body reentry vehicle known as the SV-5D. These flights were part of research into maneuverable atmospheric reentry, with direct implications for future reusable spacecraft and precision warhead delivery concepts.

Role and Legacy

The Atlas SLV-3 occupied an important transitional moment in the Atlas program's evolution. Launches took place from Vandenberg Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral, consistent with the broader Atlas launch infrastructure already well established by the early 1960s. The United States Air Force was the primary customer, reflecting the vehicle's focus on defense-related research and technology demonstration rather than commercial or civil science payloads.

The SLV-3 was part of a broader family of Atlas SLV variants that carried a range of upper stages and payload shrouds tailored to specific mission requirements throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
