Atlas IIAS

The Atlas IIAS is an American expendable orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by Lockheed Martin as the most capable member of the Atlas II family. A direct descendant of the Cold War-era Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile program, the vehicle represents a refinement of decades of American launch heritage, adapted to meet the commercial and government satellite delivery demands of the 1990s and early 2000s.

Design and Capability

The Atlas IIAS stands 47.54 meters tall with a diameter of 3.04 meters, maintaining the slender, pressure-stabilized structure characteristic of the Atlas lineage. Its defining feature relative to earlier Atlas II variants is the addition of four solid rocket boosters — a set of Thiokol Castor IVA motors strapped to the first stage — which significantly augment liftoff thrust and expand the vehicle's payload envelope. This configuration allows the Atlas IIAS to deliver 6,580 kg to low Earth orbit and 2,810 kg to geostationary transfer orbit, making it well-suited for the medium-to-heavy commercial communications satellites that were its primary cargo. The vehicle uses a Centaur upper stage, a cryogenic hydrogen/oxygen stage with a long and reliable history in American spaceflight, providing the high-energy injection capability essential for GTO and other demanding orbits.

Operational History

The Atlas IIAS conducted its first flight in 1993 and remained in service through 2004, spanning just over a decade of continuous operation. Across that period, our flight record documents 30 launches, all of which were successful, reflecting an unblemished reliability record. Launches were conducted from facilities at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida and Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, supporting both eastward GTO injections and polar or sun-synchronous missions.

The vehicle's customer manifest was anchored by Lockheed Martin and the United States Air Force, underscoring its dual role in the commercial satellite market and national security space missions. Representative missions include NROL-1 and NROL-18, classified reconnaissance payloads flown on behalf of the National Reconnaissance Office, as well as a range of commercial communications satellites: AMC 10, AMC 11, Superbird A2, and Hispasat 1D. This mix of civil, commercial, and government intelligence payloads illustrates the broad trust placed in the vehicle across the spaceflight community of that era.

Legacy

The Atlas IIAS occupied an important position in the transition of American launch services from government-dominated operations toward a more commercially competitive industry. Its perfect flight record over 30 missions established it as one of the most reliable medium-lift vehicles of its generation. The Atlas II family as a whole paved the way for the subsequent Atlas III and Atlas V programs, which carried forward the Centaur upper stage and many operational practices while introducing more powerful and modernized booster cores. The retirement of the Atlas IIAS in 2004 marked the end of a chapter in launch vehicle history that had its roots in the earliest days of the Space Age.
