The Atlas H was an American expendable orbital launch vehicle developed and operated by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force. A specialized member of the storied Atlas rocket family, it was configured specifically to support classified military payloads during the 1980s, serving as a dedicated workhorse for a narrow but strategically significant mission set.

Design and Configuration

Like other Atlas variants of its era, the Atlas H drew on the lineage of the original Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile, retaining the distinctive "stage-and-a-half" propulsion architecture in which a central sustainer engine and outboard booster engines ignite together at liftoff, with the booster section jettisoned during ascent. Standing 27 meters tall with a diameter of 3.05 meters, the vehicle was a compact and proven platform. It was capable of delivering up to 3,630 kg to low Earth orbit and 2,255 kg to geostationary transfer orbit, making it well suited to the medium-class payloads it was assigned to carry.

Operational History

The Atlas H flew exclusively between 1983 and 1987, compiling a record of five flights — all successful. All five flights were conducted on behalf of the United States Air Force, reflecting the vehicle's purely military purpose during this period.

Every mission tracked in the flight record carried payloads associated with the Parcae naval ocean surveillance satellite system, accompanied by associated MSD (Multi-Satellite Dispenser) hardware. The missions — designated Parcae 5 through Parcae 9, each accompanied by subsatellites labeled A, B, and C — were part of a broader constellation effort to provide the U.S. Navy with passive signals intelligence and ocean surveillance capabilities. These satellites worked in coordinated clusters to locate and track naval vessels by detecting radio frequency emissions, forming a critical component of Cold War maritime situational awareness.
