SM-65F Atlas

The SM-65F Atlas, commonly known as Atlas F, is an American orbital launch vehicle derived from the Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) developed by Convair for the United States Air Force. As one of the later variants in the Atlas D/E/F series, the Atlas F represented the most refined and numerous of the first-generation Atlas missiles, originally deployed as a nuclear deterrent before being repurposed for space launch operations. The United States Air Force served as its primary customer throughout its orbital career.

Origins and Background

The Atlas missile family emerged in the 1950s as the United States pursued its first operational ICBM capability. The F-series was the final and most advanced variant of this original Atlas generation, featuring improved guidance systems and silo-based storage compared to its predecessors. As the Air Force retired these missiles from strategic service, surplus airframes were converted for use as satellite launch vehicles — a common and practical transition that extended the operational life of cold war hardware into civilian and scientific space programs.

Orbital Service Record

Our flight records document nine orbital launches attributed to the SM-65F Atlas between 1968 and 1981, of which eight were successful and one resulted in a failure or partial failure. This represents a strong, though not perfect, reliability profile for a vehicle operating over a span of more than a decade.

The vehicle's mission manifest reflects a consistent focus on Earth observation and meteorological satellites. Among its most notable launches were several missions supporting the NOAA weather satellite program, including NOAA 6, NOAA 7, and the ill-fated NOAA B, as well as the Tiros-N spacecraft, which inaugurated a new generation of operational polar-orbiting weather satellites. These missions made the Atlas F a meaningful contributor to the development of America's civilian environmental monitoring infrastructure.
