The SM-65E Atlas, commonly known as the Atlas E, is an American orbital launch vehicle derived from the SM-65 Atlas intercontinental ballistic missile originally developed by Convair for the United States Air Force. As a member of the broader Atlas rocket family — one of the most historically significant launch vehicle lineages in spaceflight history — the Atlas E represents a late-service adaptation of surplus ICBM hardware repurposed for reliable, cost-effective satellite delivery.

Origins and Development

The Atlas missile family was developed during the late 1950s as the United States' first operational ICBM. Following the gradual retirement of these missiles from strategic service, surplus Atlas airframes were refurbished and modified for use as expendable launch vehicles. The Atlas E variant was among these converted boosters, retaining the distinctive stage-and-a-half propulsion architecture common to the Atlas family — a design in which the booster engines are jettisoned during ascent while the sustainer engine continues burning, all fed from a single propellant load. This configuration, combined with a pressure-stabilized stainless steel propellant tank, made the Atlas E a structurally unique vehicle in orbital launch history.

Role and Customers

The Atlas E served almost exclusively the United States Air Force, functioning as a dedicated workhorse for government satellite programs. The vehicle's customer base in tracked flight history reflects a consistent focus on operational military and civil meteorological missions. Its most notable payloads included the DMSP-5D2 series of Defense Meteorological Satellite Program spacecraft — critical weather observation satellites supporting U.S. military operations — and NOAA meteorological satellites serving national civilian weather forecasting needs. These missions underscore the vehicle's role as a dependable and specialized carrier for polar-orbiting environmental satellites.

Flight History

According to tracked flight records, the Atlas E compiled a notably clean operational record, with 15 flights tracked between 1982 and 1995, all recorded as successful. This unblemished performance across more than a decade of service speaks to the reliability of both the refurbished Atlas E hardware and the operational procedures developed around it. The vehicle's active period places it firmly in the era of expendable launch vehicle operations that preceded the proliferation of modern commercial launch services.

Recent missions in the flight record include launches of DMSP-5D2 F11, F12, and F13 as well as NOAA 12, NOAA 13, and NOAA 14, with NOAA 14 representing one of the final Atlas E flights.
