The Atlas LV-3C Centaur D is an American expendable orbital launch vehicle developed and operated under the direction of the United States Air Force, representing an important evolutionary step in the Atlas–Centaur family of rockets. Built by General Dynamics, the vehicle combined the heritage Atlas booster with a cryogenic liquid hydrogen–liquid oxygen Centaur upper stage, making it one of the earliest American rockets to fly a high-energy upper stage in operational service. This combination gave the vehicle a meaningful capability to deliver payloads to demanding trajectories, including an estimated 1,800 kg to geostationary transfer orbit.
Standing 33 metres tall with a core diameter of 3.05 metres, the Atlas LV-3C Centaur D retained the distinctive pressure-stabilised "steel balloon" structure of the Atlas lineage while incorporating the Centaur stage atop — a pairing that required substantial engineering effort to manage the challenges of handling cryogenic propellants in flight. The Centaur stage's high specific impulse made the Atlas LV-3C Centaur D considerably more capable than earlier Atlas variants that relied on conventional propellants in their upper stages.

The vehicle flew between 1965 and 1967, accumulating seven tracked flights, all of which were successful. This unblemished record across its active service period speaks to the maturation of the Atlas–Centaur design, which had encountered significant difficulties in its earlier developmental flights before this variant entered service.
The launch manifest for the Atlas LV-3C Centaur D is dominated by NASA's Surveyor programme, a series of robotic lunar landers intended to demonstrate controlled soft-landing on the Moon and survey the surface in preparation for the Apollo crewed missions. Missions including Surveyor 1, Surveyor 2, Surveyor 3, Surveyor 4, and related Surveyor model and pathfinder flights were lofted by this vehicle. Surveyor 1, launched in 1966, achieved the first successful American soft landing on the Moon, a landmark accomplishment in which the Atlas LV-3C Centaur D played a direct and essential role. While not all Surveyor missions achieved complete success at the lunar surface, the launch vehicle itself performed reliably throughout.

The United States Air Force served as the primary customer and institutional backer of the vehicle, reflecting the close relationship between military space programmes and NASA's ambitious robotic exploration agenda during the 1960s. Launches took place from Cape Canaveral, the primary American launch facility of the era.
