The Atlas LV-3C Centaur is an American orbital launch vehicle developed in the early 1960s as part of the pioneering effort to pair the Atlas missile airframe with the experimental Centaur upper stage. Operated under the auspices of the United States Air Force and managed through a collaboration between General Dynamics (which produced the Atlas booster) and Pratt & Whitney (which supplied the liquid-hydrogen-fueled Centaur engines), the vehicle represented one of the most ambitious propulsion engineering efforts of its era. It launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and stands 33 meters tall with a diameter of 3.05 meters.
Role and Significance
The Atlas LV-3C Centaur occupies an important place in spaceflight history as an early operational expression of the Atlas–Centaur concept — the first American launch vehicle to use liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen as propellants in an upper stage. This cryogenic combination offered a substantial performance advantage over conventional propellant combinations, enabling the vehicle to deliver payloads to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) with a capacity of approximately 1,800 kilograms. That capability made it directly relevant to the emerging generation of communications and scientific satellites, and it laid essential groundwork for the long-lived Atlas–Centaur family that would follow.
Flight History
Our records document four flights of the Atlas LV-3C Centaur, spanning the years 1963 to 1965. Of those, two were successful and two resulted in failure or partial failure, reflecting the considerable technical difficulty of maturing a cryogenic upper stage during the early Space Race.
The tracked missions include the AC-2 Instrumentation Ring and AC-3 Instrumentation Ring flights, which were developmental test articles designed to validate systems rather than deliver operational payloads. These were followed by the Surveyor Mass Model and the Atlas Centaur | Surveyor-SD 1 missions, which were directly tied to NASA's Surveyor lunar lander program — the vehicle was being qualified to carry the robotic spacecraft that would eventually soft-land on the Moon. The mixed success rate across this small flight manifest underscores that this variant was firmly in the development and qualification phase, absorbing lessons that would benefit its successors.
