The Ariane 62 Block 2 is a European medium-lift orbital launch vehicle operated by Arianespace on behalf of the European Space Agency (ESA) and commercial customers. An evolved configuration of the Ariane 6 rocket family, it is manufactured by ArianeGroup and launches from the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou, French Guiana. The Block 2 designation reflects incremental improvements introduced after the initial operational phase of the Ariane 62 variant, which carries two Vulcain 2.1 main-stage strap-on boosters in contrast to the four-booster Ariane 64.
Design and Capability
Standing 63 metres tall with a core diameter of 5.4 metres, the Ariane 62 Block 2 is a slender, high-capacity vehicle suited to a broad range of orbital destinations. It is capable of lifting 10,900 kg to low Earth orbit (LEO) and 5,100 kg to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), positioning it as a competitive medium-class launcher in the global market. Like the broader Ariane 6 family, it uses a cryogenic upper stage powered by the Vinci engine, which provides the multi-ignition capability essential for complex mission profiles, including direct injection to precise orbital slots and deorbit manoeuvres that reduce debris risk.

According to tracked flight data, the Ariane 62 Block 2 has been active from 2024 through 2039, accumulating 15 tracked flights with a recorded success rate reflecting strong operational reliability. Its manifest has been dominated by high-priority European institutional payloads, most prominently the Metop-SG (Second Generation) meteorological satellite series operated by EUMETSAT. Missions including Metop-SG A2, A3, B2, and B3 underscore the vehicle's central role in Europe's operational meteorology infrastructure, providing continuity for weather forecasting and climate monitoring services.
Beyond meteorology, the Ariane 62 Block 2 has supported flagship ESA science missions, including the ARIEL space telescope — the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey mission — which studies the atmospheres of planets orbiting distant stars.
