The Ariane 4 family was produced in several configurations distinguished by the type and number of strap-on boosters attached to a common core stage; the "44P" designation indicates the vehicle carries four solid-propellant strap-on boosters, giving it a substantial lift capability suited to heavier commercial payloads.
Design and Configuration
The Ariane 44P stands 56.9 metres tall with a core diameter of 3.8 metres. Its four solid boosters augment the thrust of the liquid-fuelled core stages at liftoff, enabling the vehicle to deliver up to 6,500 kg to low Earth orbit or 3,390 kg to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO). The GTO capacity made it competitive for the commercial communications satellite market that dominated the 1990s launch manifest.
